- Arvind Walmiki

THANE: Two sisters, who went missing from their home in Uttar Pradesh almost a month ago, were reunited with their family on Monday.

The 17-year-old girl, who is mentally challenged, and her three-year-old sister boarded a train from their hometown Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh and reached Thane on January 14.

The next day, the Kopri police found the girls roaming around the station and alerted senior police officers from Thane commissionerate.

When chief judiciary magistrate (CJM) Rajendra Tambe came to know about the girls, he ordered the police to trace the girls’ parents as soon as possible. Tambe bought them clothes and food.

He said, “When I met them, both were scared. I saw that the older girl had a problem. I called up Thane Mental Hospital superintendent Dr Sanjay Bodade. He kept the girl in the hospital for almost five days for treatment.”

Dipak Deoraj, deputy commissioner of police, Thane crime branch, said, “We kept the younger girl with an NGO. Women police personnel were present with her. The threeyear-old girl told us about their home. We found out that they are from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh. We alerted their family and called them here.”

The parents had lodged a missing person’s complaint.

The girls’ mother, Sarita Rai, 40, was happy to be reunited with her children. “I have five daughters. The 17-year-old is the eldest. After the two went missing, we looked for them as far as Patna in Bihar. After we searched for more than two weeks, we registered a kidnapping case. We are happy to see our daughters.”
