MUMBAI:CALLING it Maharashtra’s ‘Vyapam scam’, the president of Indian Youth Congress’s state unit alleged a recruitment fraud in Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC).

Talking at a press conference on Monday, Satyajeet Tambe alleged mass copying in the competitive exams by exploiting the faulty process used for issuing seat numbers to the aspirants. He also alleged a nexus between MPSC officials and coaching classes.

“The MPSC issues seat numbers to students based on the last four digits of their mobile numbers. Students, especially from the coaching classes, are part of this scam. A probe into the complaints received from honest students revealed that most students from coaching classes are being allotted same examination halls. If this wasn’t enough, students from same coaching classes are issued successive seat numbers. Our probe also found that MPSC has received numerous applications from students requesting to change mobile numbers they had registered earlier,” he said.

Tambe alleged complaints from students to MPSC and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis have fallen on deaf ears. He also threatened to move court if no action was taken and the exam scheduled for February 17 — Class-i officers — was not deferred.

“Number of students cracking MPSC exams through trickery has increased in the past two years. Out of 6,160 aspirants who cleared agriculture officers’ exam, seat numbers of 3,000 applicants were sequential,” he added.

Refuting the allegations, MPSC chairperson Chandrashekhar Oak said they have not received a single complaint regarding the alleged fraud.

“We maintain strict vigil during the verification process. It is impossible to reschedule or cancel the examination on February 17, as 3.5 lakh students will be appearing for it. We will increase vigilance during the exam,” he added.
