MODI WILL VISIT SEOUL TO RECEIVE PEACE PRIZE

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to travel to South Korea in the last week of February to receive the Seoul Peace Prize, a trip that is expected to be one of his last major foreign policy engagement­s before the general elections. Modi is expected to be in Seoul during February 21-22, when he will also hold talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, people familiar with developmen­ts said. Last October, Modi was named the recipient of the 2018 Seoul Peace Prize for his contributi­ons to internatio­nal cooperatio­n and the growth of the Indian and global economies. He is the 14th person to be awarded the prize establishe­d in 1990 to commemorat­e the success of the Olympic Games in Seoul and to crystallis­e the yearning for peace on the Korean Peninsula.

SC to hear Jafri’s plea on clean chit to Modi in Guj riots

NEW DELHI : The Supreme Court Monday said it will hear in July a plea of Zakia Jafri, challengin­g the SIT’S clean chit to the then Gujarat CM Narendra Modi in connection with the 2002 Godhra riots. A bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar listed the matter for hearing in July. Zakia, the wife of ex-mp Ehsan Jafri who was one of the 68 killed in Ahmedabad’s Gulberg society, has challenged the Gujarat HC’S Oct 5, 2017 order rejecting her plea against the SIT decision.

‘Probe agencies trying to foist us with Tetlumbde case’

CHENNAI: The Ambedkar Periyar Students Circle, a student’s forum in IIT Madras, has on Sunday alleged that the Union Government’s investigat­ion agencies are trying to foist them with Anand Tetlumbde’s case of Bhima Koregaon incident. According to a letter posted by APSC, the intelligen­ce agencies have been targeting Ramesh, one of the founding members of Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle, IIT Madras. “Ramesh is currently working as a teaching staff (on contract basis) at Anna University. Intelligen­ce officers have threatened the administra­tion of Anna University demanding details about Ramesh,” APSC said in its post.

HC issues notice to Moin Qureshi on CBI plea

NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court Monday issued notice to controvers­ial meat exporter Moin Akhtar Qureshi on a CBI plea to enhance the security amount he has to pay to travel abroad. Justice Chander Shekhar sought the response of Qureshi on the agency’s plea seeking enhancing of security from ₹2 crore to ₹6 crore which Qureshi, accused in a cheating and corruption case, has been asked to furnish before travelling to the UAE and Pakistan. Recently, Qureshi was allowed by a trial court to travel to the UAE from February 15-23 for attending the Gulf Food Festival and to Pakistan from March 6-20 to attend his niece’s wedding. The court had also directed him to furnish an additional security of ₹2 crore in the form of bank guarantee and warned that in case of violation of any of the conditions imposed, the amount would be forfeited.

Supplement­ary chargeshee­t filed in Pansare murder case

PUNE: The Special Investigat­ion Team (SIT) probing the 2015 murder of Govind Pansare, Communist party leader, submitted a 400-page supplement­ary chargeshee­t against four suspects in a Kolhapur court on Monday. The SIT named Amol

Arvind Kale, Vasudeo Bhagwan Suryvanshi, Bharat Jayant Kurne and Amit Ramchandra Digwekar in the chargeshee­t, all of whom have been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 302,307, 120 B and 44, with other relevant sections amounting to murder, attempt to murder, misuse of weapons and criminal conspiracy. The SIT had taken Amol Kale into custody on November 15, 2018; Vasudeo Suryvanshi and Bharat Kurne on December 1; while Digwekar was arrested on January 15, 2019.

HC refuses to restrain Jaya death probe panel

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Monday declined to restrain Justice A Arumugaswa­my Commission from probing the adequacy or correctnes­s of the treatment given to late chief minister J Jayalalith­aa at the hospital. The court was hearing the petition filed by Apollo Hospitals Enterprise­s Ltd to restrain the probe panel from investigat­ing the adequacy or correctnes­s of the treatment given to Jayalalith­aa. The Apollo Hospitals contended that the probe panel is going beyond its terms of reference. Jayalalith­aa was in Apollo Hospitals here for 75 days in 2016 before she died there due to cardiac arrest on December 5, 2016.
