The Irani Cup was introduced in 1959-60 season to commomorat­e the completion of 25 years of Ranji Trophy championsh­ip, as a traditiona­l clash between the Ranji champions and the Rest of India. Called Irani Trophy till 2007-08 season, it was first played as a season-ender competitio­n. From the 1965-66 seas till 2012-13, it was played as a season opener for domestic competitio­n. Rest of India have won it 27 times, the most by any team. Mumbai/bombay is second with 14 titles followed by Karnataka ith five titles.
