INSTALLING SPEED GOVERNORS IN VEHICLES A WELCOME MOVE

-

The installation of speed governors by the transport department of the state in about 10 lakh public transport and commercial vehicles is a welcome initiative (9.9L state vehicles get speed governors, can’t exceed 80kmph, February 12). If the driver of any of these vehicles exceeds the pre-set speed limit, the fuel supply to the engine will automatically stop. This long-overdue move will benefit the public immensely since overspeeding, one of the major causes of accidents on roads, will not be possible anymore.

ROAD ACCIDENTS A CAUSE OF CONCERN

The sharp spike in the number of road accidents shows no signs of relenting and is must cause deep concern (3 killed in two separate road mishaps at Mumbra, February 12). Unfortunately, the authorities are doing little in this regard. The main cause of road mishaps is the complete disregard of basic and simple traffic rules. CCTV’S must be installed at multiple points and monitored minutely. All those found of violating traffic rules must be made to pay hefty fines.

CHILDREN SHOULD BE TAUGHT ILL-EFFECTS OF TOBACCO CONSUMPTION

The consequences of using tobacco in any form are dire we know (Draw this in: Tobacco, with or without smoke, causes cancer, February 12). The use of hookah pens, e-cigarettes, alcohol etc. is on a rise amongst students due to easy availability. The education department must arrange regular lectures in schools and colleges by motivational speakers to induce a sense of caution in our kids. The parentteacher associations/ municipal authorities should volunteer to organise occasional compulsory trips to cancer treatment centres and rehabilitation centres where kids can see live examples of users struggling to survive in the former and battling with themselves in the latter.
