3.2L establishments owe BMC ₹3,681cr in property tax dues

MUMBAI: Over 3.24 lakh establishments in the city owe the civic body ₹3,681.98 crore in the form of property tax dues.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) annual budget for 2019-20 revealed that the property tax department was incurring a massive loss of revenue for the civic body.
According to municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta’s statement during the budget presentation on February 4, income from the property tax is estimated to drop by ₹189 crore this year.
In 2018, the income from property tax was estimated at ₹5,206.15 crore but the estimate has come down to ₹5016.19 crore in 2019.
According to data from the civic body’s assessment and collection department, establishments in the nine wards of the island city owe BMC a total of ₹1,181 crore, the ones in six wards of the eastern suburbs owe ₹766 crore, while those in the nine wards of the western suburbs owe BMC ₹1,733 crore in the form of property tax dues. Areas lagging the most in clearing their dues are K East ward or Andheri East (₹423 crore), G South ward or Parel and Elphinstone road, (₹403 crore), and H East ward or Bandra East (₹260 crore). Followed by these are L ward of Kurla area (₹254 crore) and P South ward or Goregaon West (₹207 crore).
