PORT TRUST MUST ACT IN PUBLIC INTEREST

-

It will be good if the Mumbai Port Trust (MBPT) acts on expert advice and public opinion while trying to revamp the eastern waterfront, refraining from bulldozing its way to a commercial development. (MBPT open to more ideas, suggestions, says chairman, February 21). More affordable housing, rehabilitation of slums in the area and walkable open spaces need to be provided.

NEED TO PRESERVE FORESTS, KEEP LEOPARDS SAFE

It was disheartening to see a leopard roaming around in the mall (Leopard’s day out: Walks into mall, hotel in Thane, February 21). Residential places like Mulund and Aarey Milk Colony are already facing regular visits by the wild cats. The spotting of leopards in cities is alarming and sends out a message that we need to preserve our forests. But, at the same time forest officials also need to make sure they protect the wildlife and don’t let them wander around in residential areas. We have to preserve our animal species, but not at the expense of human life.

K MANIAM

II

These days man has started invading wildlife territory by cutting down trees, dumping debris into mangroves, etc. This has unbalanced the flora and fauna, which displaces birds and animals from their habitat. In the name of development, many areas are being exploited and this needs to be stopped.
