Federer cruises into fourth round of Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS: Roger Federer extended his dominance of Stan Wawrinka on Tuesday, beating his friend and fellow Swiss 6-3, 6-4 to reach the fourth round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters.

Federer needed barely an hour to take his record to 22-3 over Wawrinka, a former world No 3 who is currently ranked 40th in the world and working his way back in the wake of his double knee surgery.

The fourth-seeded Federer, who is now seeking a record sixth Indian Wells title, next faces Britain’s Kyle Edmund, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Macedonian qualifier Radu Albot.

DJOKOVIC STUNNED BY KOHLSCHREI­BER

Philipp Kohlschrei­ber stunned Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday, sending the world No 1 tumbling out of a tournament he had won five times before.

The German punched the air in celebratio­n after a video review confirmed that his forehand winner caught the line on match point to seal the upset victory in Indian Wells.

“It’s a very special moment. Playing the top guys is always a big pleasure, but most of the time they beat you. Today, with Novak being No 1, top-seeded here, it’s a very incredible win for me,” Kohlschrei­ber said .

TOP-RANKED OSAKA CRASHES OUT TOO

INDIAN WELLS: World No 1 Naomi Osaka crashed out of Indian Wells on Tuesday, routed by Belinda Bencic. Ranked 23rd in the world, Bencic defeated Osaka 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the prestigiou­s WTA premier mandatory event.

That marked the start of a remarkable rise that included Osaka’s first Grand Slam title at the US Open. She followed that with an Australian Open crown that sent her to No 1.

VONDROUSOV­A SHOCKS HALEP TO ENTER LAST-8

Czech teen Marketa Vondrousov­a shocked world No 2 Simona Halep 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 on Tuesday, notching her first victory over a top-five player to reach the WTA quarter-finals at Indian Wells.

Vondrousov­a, 19 and ranked 61st in the world, reached the last eight of a prestigiou­s premier mandatory level tournament for the first time.

WADA APPEAL AGAINST DOPING DECISION

LAUSANNE:THE World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) said it had filed an appeal against a decision to clear Chinese swimmer Sun Yang of missing an out of competitio­n doping test. WADA said that it had filed the appeal with the Court of Arbitratio­n for Sport (CAS) following a decision by swimming’s governing body FINA not to pursue a case against the multiple world champion.
