Federer cruises into fourth round of Indian Wells
INDIAN WELLS: Roger Federer extended his dominance of Stan Wawrinka on Tuesday, beating his friend and fellow Swiss 6-3, 6-4 to reach the fourth round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters.
Federer needed barely an hour to take his record to 22-3 over Wawrinka, a former world No 3 who is currently ranked 40th in the world and working his way back in the wake of his double knee surgery.
The fourth-seeded Federer, who is now seeking a record sixth Indian Wells title, next faces Britain’s Kyle Edmund, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Macedonian qualifier Radu Albot.
DJOKOVIC STUNNED BY KOHLSCHREIBER
Philipp Kohlschreiber stunned Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday, sending the world No 1 tumbling out of a tournament he had won five times before.
The German punched the air in celebration after a video review confirmed that his forehand winner caught the line on match point to seal the upset victory in Indian Wells.
“It’s a very special moment. Playing the top guys is always a big pleasure, but most of the time they beat you. Today, with Novak being No 1, top-seeded here, it’s a very incredible win for me,” Kohlschreiber said .

INDIAN WELLS: World No 1 Naomi Osaka crashed out of Indian Wells on Tuesday, routed by Belinda Bencic. Ranked 23rd in the world, Bencic defeated Osaka 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the prestigious WTA premier mandatory event.
That marked the start of a remarkable rise that included Osaka’s first Grand Slam title at the US Open. She followed that with an Australian Open crown that sent her to No 1.
VONDROUSOVA SHOCKS HALEP TO ENTER LAST-8
Czech teen Marketa Vondrousova shocked world No 2 Simona Halep 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 on Tuesday, notching her first victory over a top-five player to reach the WTA quarter-finals at Indian Wells.
Vondrousova, 19 and ranked 61st in the world, reached the last eight of a prestigious premier mandatory level tournament for the first time.
WADA APPEAL AGAINST DOPING DECISION
LAUSANNE:THE World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) said it had filed an appeal against a decision to clear Chinese swimmer Sun Yang of missing an out of competition doping test. WADA said that it had filed the appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following a decision by swimming’s governing body FINA not to pursue a case against the multiple world champion.
