Saina withdraws from Swiss Open

NEW DELHI : Saina Nehwal pulled out of the ongoing Swiss Open with stomach ache, the world No 9 revealed it on her Instagram account on Wednesday.

“So some sad news .. was really going through acute stomach pain from last Monday.. managed to play few matches in All England with lot of pain ... and decided to skip swiss open and come back to India and find out the issue and I found out it’s Acute Gastroente­ritis with mild pancreatit­is and the doctors have recommende­d me to get admitted and hopefully I recover soon out of it ...,” (sic) Saina wrote.

The two-time Swiss Open winner had lost in the quarter-finals of the All-england last week in Birmingham following a bout of diarrhea which affected her performanc­e.

In the matches on Wenesday, India’s Subhankar Dey beat France’s Lucas Claerbout 21-19, 21-17 but Vaishnavi Reddy lost to Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba 12-21, 23-21, 9-21.

JOSHNA ENTERS QUARTERS IN EGYPT

CAIRO: Joshna Chinappa extended her impressive run in the Women’s Black Ball Squash Open with a fighting win over sixth seed Sarah-jane Perry.

After downing the legendary Nicol David in the first round, she wore down the English player 11-4, 6-11, 14-12, 11-9 to storm into quarter-finals. It was Joshna’s first win over Sarah in since the 2012 Chennai Open.

It was a match of over four games but on this occasion, the Indian seemed in greater control and nothing displayed that better than the first game. Though the higher-ranked Sarah came back strongly in the next, Joshna was ready for the fight. In the last eight, Joshna plays third Joelle King of New Zealand.

LAHIRI EYES COMEBACK AT PLAYERS C’SHIP
