BMC RESPONSIBLE FOR BRIDGE COLLAPSE

-

The responsibility of the bridge collapse tragedy squarely lies on the shoulders of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) (6 dead, 31 injured as pedestrian overbridge at CSMT collapses, March 15). However, the BMC is unable to allot the necessary funds for a number of pending civic projects owing to the fact that a large portion of its revenue gets dissipated in paying the wages to its over one lakh strong staff. Negligible amount is then left with the BMC to carry out its statutory duty of providing civic amenities to the taxpayers.

Politicians are quick to claim credit when inaugurating bridges, but hesitate at accepting blame when they collapse. The collapse of the bridge at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station (CSMT) is an example of the callousness. Other than the usual meaningless condolences the chief minister has nothing to offer. Going by the past experiences the high powered probe is likely to end up with nothing concrete. The compensation will be borne by the taxpayers money. Unless those at the top are made to pay the situation is not going to improve.

I can’t believe the Maximum City and the nation’s richest municipal corporation is home to crumbling infrastructure. To make matters worse, the civic body never learns its lesson from the previous tragedies. This is a matter of concern.
