NEW DELHI: Congress president Rahul Gandhi hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi after casting his vote on Sunday, saying the latter “used hatred” during the elections but that the grand old party “used love”.

Asserting that this election saw a “good fight” between the two rival parties, Gandhi said he thought that “love is going to win”. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi used hatred, we (Congress) love. And, I think love is going to win,” he told reporters in Delhi.

Clad in a white kurta-pyjama, he was accompanied by party’s New Delhi candidate Ajay Maken on way to the polling booth, a walking distance from his Tughlaq Lane residence.

“There are four issues in this election, these are not our issues but people’s issues. And most important among these is of unemployment. Then, condition of farmers, demonetisation, Gabbar Singh Tax (a term he uses often to mock the Goods and Services Tax), corruption and the Rafale issue,” he said.

Asked how many seats the Congress would win, he said, “I won’t comment on that. It will be decided by the people.” “People are the master. Whatever people say, we will accept. How many seats we will win, people will decide that... Jai Hind,” he said.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said it was “very clear” that the BJP will face defeat in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls as people were “angry and distressed”.

The party incharge for eastern Uttar Pradesh said it was “very clear that the BJP government is going”. “There is anger among people, and they are under distress... And, now, they will express their anger against this government through voting,” she said. Priyanka Gandhi also hit out at Modi. “He doesn’t reply to any of the issues that our party raised, and just talks about random things.”

Later in the day, Modi launched a sharp attack on Rahul Gandhi in Khandwa, saying dynasty can take him to the top position of a party, but it “doesn’t bring vision and wisdom”. He also attacked the party over the tag of “Hindu terror” that had been coined during the tenure of the then United Progressive Alliance government in connection with a series of explosions.
