Bhullar finishes T-25 at British Masters

SOUTHPORT: Gaganjeet Bhullar once again played fairly solid golf for two-under 70 in the final round, ending Tied-25th at the British Masters, his second best finish of the season, on Sunday.

He had a total of seven-under 281 as he sunk in four birdies and two bogeys from 11th to 18th.

While he did not drop a bogey on first as he had done on the first three days, he did drop a bogey on a par-5 at 11th, but birdied the par-5s at second and fifth and parred 17th.

The 23-year-old Swede Marcus Kinhult (70), winless as a pro, played excellent golf on the final day and held his nerves over the final few holes, as overnight leader, Matt Wallace (71) showed chinks in his armour in the final stages.

GANGJEE ENDS TIED 39, ASAJI WINS TITLE

CHIBA PREFECTURE, JAPAN : India’s Rahil Gangjee finished tied 39th while Viraj Madappa faltered on the final day and ended tied 53rd at the Asia-pacific Diamond Cup here on Sunday.

Madappa had an 81 in a round where nothing seemed to go right for him, while Gangjee (74) Gangjee started with a double but managed to hold his round.

Japan’s Yosuke Asaji capped an unforgetta­ble week when he held his nerve to win the tournament by one shot at Sobu Country Club. Asaji’s winning total of three-under-par 281 also earned him a spot at The 148th Open which will be held at Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland in July.

VANI DROPS TO T-34 ON FINAL DAY

HONG KONG: Vani Kapoor had a horrendous final round of sixover 78 and dropped from overnight seventh to finish tied-34th in the Hong Kong Ladies Open, on Sunday. Vani began with a double bogey and followed that with three straight bogeys and ended the day with two more. She had two more birdies and also another bogey for a 78 and a total of 3-over 219.

Amandeep Drall (76) the only other Indian to make the cut finished T-55 at 8-over 224.

China’s Liu Yuan came from behind to card 68 and win the title as overnight leader Du Mohan (76) dropped to tied second with fellow Chinese Zhang Wei Wei (71) and Thailand’s Renuka Suksukont (68), who finished at 210.

ANKITA EXITS FROM LUAN ITF EVENT

NEW DELHI: Ankita Raina recovered from a slow start but could not carry forward the momentum and crashed out of the USD 60,000 ITF women’s event in Luan, China. The second seed Indian lost 3-6, 6-1, 2-6 to local girl Ying-ying Duan in the semifinals of the hard court tournament.

Neverthele­ss, it was one of better results for the Indian this season. Ankita has entered two finals this season, winning a USD 25k event in Singapore and ending runner-up in a USD 60k tournament in Istanbul.

TEAM ARMY WINS TWO TITLES IN DESERT STORM

JAISALMER: The Indian Army made its presence felt in the 2019 Desert Storm in a big way, winning the team trophies in two out of the three categories that they competed in. The Team Army Adventure Wing’s Lt. Col. Aman Katoch and co-driver Capt. Siddhartha Nandal claimed the second runners’ up trophy in the Ndure category late on Saturday. Their most experience­d driver Lt. Col. Shakti Bajaj too was given a heroic welcome as he and co-driver Aditya Chand annexed the tenth position in the Xtreme Category.

SETHU FC BEAT FC KOLHAPUR CITY 9-0

Ludhiana Sethu FC demolished FC Kolhapur City 9-0 while SAISTC Cuttack bounced back with a convincing 4-0 win over Baroda Football Academy in the Indian Women’s League (IWL) here on Sunday. Sethu FC’S Sabitra Bhandari and Ratanbala Devi scored a hat-trick each at the Guru Nanak Stadium.
