PHASE 1 THANE: The construction for the Metro-4 (Wadala-kasarvadavli) line may hit a roadblock, as a Thane-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) approached the Bombay high court (HC), demanding the route be made underground.

The NGO, Thane Nagarik Pratishthan, told media persons on Monday that in its petition filed in April, activists stated that an elevated corridor could lead to traffic congestion, cutting down of trees and displacement of the residents. The NGO also alleged that the project is being implemented in a discreet manner, without divulging the details to residents.

Rohit Joshi, an activist from the NGO, said, “The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) didn’t consider the suggestions and objections made by the residents. Recently in a survey, 70% of more than 1,000 respondents had stated that Metro-4 should have an underground ground route. For an elevated Metro corridor, the authorities would have to axe or transplant more than 1,000 trees between Teen Hath Naka and Manpada signal. Many residents and shopkeepers will also be displaced.”

Town planning expert Nitin Kilewala, has also backed the NGO’S demand. “The Metro stations on this route are planned after every 1km, for which an area of 1.59 lakh sq m would have to be occupied. This will leading to traffic congestion.”

MMRDA did not respond to calls and messages. MEGHA POL
