THE COMPLAINANT DEPOSED THAT THE MAN HAD CAUGHT HER BY THE NECK AND TRIED TO SPRAY PAINT HER FACE

MUMBAI: A metropolitan court recently sentenced a 55-year-old man to two years in jail for attacking his sister-in-law with a blade in 2010 over a property dispute.

The accused, Dwarkadas Hiranandani, allegedly spraypainted his wife’s name on the door of his sister-in-law’s home in Oshiwara nine years ago. When she opened the door to see where the noise was coming from, Hiranandani allegedly caught her by the neck and attempted to spray paint on her face.

The complainant also deposed that Hiranandani slashed her left hand with a blade. During her cross-examination, she said the Bombay high court (HC) had referred a property dispute between her and Hiranandani for mediation.

Though the complainant also told the police that Hiranandani tried to molest her, the Oshiwara police’s charge sheet omitted that part.

However, the court noted that the case did not deserve inclusion of molestation charges in light of the property mediation process ordered by the HC.

After the prosecution examined five witnesses in the assault case, the metropolitan court found Hiranandani guilty, and sentenced him to two years in jail. The court also fined him ₹10,000.
