MUMBAI:THE Vasai sessions court sentenced a 28-year-old labourer to 15 years rigorous imprisonment and levied a fine of ₹5,000 for causing the death of his 22-yearold wife by setting her on fire.

According to assistant public prosecutor Kadambini Khandagale, Ghulab Deoram Chavan would constantly fight with his wife, Anita. On November 21, 2015, a fight ensued between the two after Chavan did not allow Anita to go to her maternal home. “Anita poured kerosene on herself and Chavan set her ablaze using a matchstick,” said Khandagale.

Neighbours rushed her to a private hospital, where she died during treatment. Chavan was arrested and booked under section 304 (culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

He was convicted based on Anita’s dying declaration to her relatives.
