22-YEAR-OLD PILLION RIDER DIES IN PANVEL ACCIDENT

NAVI MUMBAI : A 22-year-old man, riding pillion on a bike, died while his 18-year-old friend was injured after their vehicle hit a rock at Panvel on Monday.

According to the police, Chandrakan­t Chaudhary and his friend Baman Darwada, 18, residents of Apte village, were returning home from another village, after visiting one of Chaudhary’s relatives.

“Darwada was riding the bike and Chaudhary was sitting pillion. As they were entering the Panvel region, Darwada lost control on the bike and hit a rock along the road. The impact was such that they were thrown on the road,” said a police officer from Panvel police station.

“Both of them suffered severe injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital by residents. Chaudhary succumbed to his injuries after some time,” he said.

Darwada is recuperati­ng in the hospital. “It is not clear whether he was wearing a helmet. We will take his statement after he is discharged from the hospital,” the officer said.
