RAEBARELI/LUCKNOW: A tussle over the Rae Bareli zila panchayat chairman’s post took an ugly turn on Tuesday when Congress MLA Aditi Singh’s convoy was attacked twice on its way to the district panchayat office where voting was scheduled on a no-confidence motion against panchayat head, Awadhesh Singh.

Narrating the sequence of events, the Congress MLA from Rae Bareli claimed that about 15 masked assailants in two-three SUVS attacked the convoy twice at Harchandpur and Baccharawa toll plaza while it was heading from Lucknow to Rae Bareli between 9.40 am and 10 am.

Aditi Singh was injured when her vehicle overturned in Harchandpur area. She alleged that local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and Awadhesh Singh were behind the attack.

Aditi Singh claimed the attack was pre-planned to kidnap zila panchayat members accompanying her and defer the no-confidence motion against Awadhesh Singh, the brother of BJP’S Lok Sabha candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh who is pitted against UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The floor test was deferred because the MLA, who received minor injuries, and zila panchayat members failed to reach the district panchayat office.

Inspector general of police, law and order, Praveen Kumar said an FIR had been registered against Dinesh Pratap Singh, Awadesh Singh and unidentified assailants at Harchandpur police station.

Dinesh Pratap Singh, however, refuted allegations that the BJP was behind the attack at a press conference in Rae Bareli.

Thirty-one of 52 zila panchayat members, brought the no-confidence motion against Awadhesh Singh last month.
