LAKSHADWEE­P: POLICE QUIZZES FILMMAKER

KAVARATTI : Lakshadwee­p filmmaker Aisha Sultana, who is facing a sedition charge over her ‘bio-weapon’ remarks for the UT administra­tor Praful Khoda Patel, appeared before the police on Sunday. Sultana was quizzed at Kavaratti police headquarte­rs for over three hours. In a video message to reporters, she said she had been directed to stay on the islands for 3-4 days.

A single Judge bench of Justice Ashok Menon on Thursday directed her to appear on June 20 before Kavaratti Police for interrogat­ion while granting her interim anticipato­ry bail for a week. The court has reserved its final order.

Police registered a case against the filmmaker with charges of sedition and hate speech on June 11, on the complaint of BJP Lashadweep wing president C Abdul Khader Haji. In the complaint, Haji cited a debate on a Malayalam news channels, in which Sultana called the UT’S administra­tor, a “bio-weapon”. Haji said her words were in bad taste and intended to create hatred and aversion in the minds of people.
