DU given more time to verify Baisoya degree
THE COURT ASKED THE UNIVERSITY TO FILE ITS REPORT BY NOVEMBER 20, FIXING IT AS THE NEXT DATE OF HEARING
NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Monday granted more time to Delhi University to complete its verification process into the alleged fake degree row of the newly elected Delhi University Student’s Union (DUSU) president Ankiv Baisoya.
Appearing for the university, Mohinder J S Rupal informed the court that they would receive the verification report on Monday evening and so they required more time to come to a conclusion.
But appearing for the petitioner Sunny Chillar, his counsel Javed Khan contended that the university was using delaying tactics .
He said that according to the Lyngdoh committee recommendations, if any post of the student’s union office bearer falls vacant within two months of the declaration of the election results, then re-election can be held.
If that two-month period lapses, then the second in command takes over the post without any re-elections.
Interestingly, Tuesday will mark two months of the declaration of DUSU results.
So even if Baisoya is found guilty of a fake degree, then DUSU vice-president Shakti Singh, who also belongs to the Rss-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), will automatically take charge as the president of the students’ union.
Justice C Hari Shankar asked the university to file its report by November 20, fixing it as the next date of hearing.
The court’s direction came while it was hearing a plea filed by NSUI candidate Sunny Chillar, who sought to cancel Baisoya’s admission, claiming he had submitted “forged and fabricated” documents to secure admission.
Baisoya, a member of the ABVP, has claimed he was a student of Thiruvalluvar University between 2013- 2016 and denied the allegations.
A row erupted on October 3 when the Tamil Nadu university wrote to Delhi’s principal secretary of education, saying Baisoya had never been their student. But they are yet to send a written confirmation to DU.
