Name matters, not acronym: EC tells HC on AAP plea
NEWDELHI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday informed the Delhi High Court that the registration of a party is done based on its full name and not the abbreviation. The explanation was given in a case in which the Aam Aadmi Party had challenged the registration of Aapki Apni Party, which had the same acronym.
The ECI filed an affidavit before justice C Hari Shankar while replying to a plea by AAP, which had challenged ECI’S decision rejecting its objection against the registration of Aapki Apni Party (Peoples) as a political party under provisions of the Representation of People Act.
The AAP had claimed since both parties had similar abbreviations, it would create confusion among voters. The ECI rejected the party’s plea on July 16.
On Tuesday, the counsel for the ECI said no confusion would be created since full names are taken into account. Justice C Hari Shankar listed the matter for further hearing on February 22 next year. The court granted time to Aapki Apni Party (Peoples) to file its response NEW DELHI: North Delhi mayor Adesh Gupta on Tuesday said all schools in his municipality will be made tobacco-free and the heads of the institutes would ensure tobacco products are not sold within 100 yards of the premises.
