The deceased were identified as Rakesh Yadav (31), Billu Yadav (36), Bhopal Singh (35), Sher Singh (40), Surinder Singh (55), and Ajit Singh (33), the driver of the van. Rakesh, a lawyer, Billu, of Surkhpur village, and Bhopal were in the Ertiga and died on the spot.

Raj Singh, who was at the wheel of the Ertiga, suffered severe injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The police have sent his blood samples to determine if he was inebriated while driving.

Passersby who witnessed the accident told police that the Ertiga seemed to be speeding and skidded for at least 50 metres after hitting the divider around 10:30pm.

Mahipal Singh, head constable of Rampura police station and investigating officer in the case, said passersby and police helped take the victims to the hospital.

“Our team rushed the injured to the nearest hospital where four persons were declared dead on arrival. We informed the families, who reached the hospital late on Sunday night. Surinder Singh and Ajit Singh died on Monday morning, while undergoing treatment. The bodies were handed over to the families on Monday, after the autopsy,” Vidhya Sagar, sub-inspector, Rampura police station, said.

A police officer privy to the investigation said the extent of damage suggested that both vehicles were being driven at speeds higher than 100 km/hr.
