NEWDELHI: A 28-year-old woman was shot at, allegedly by her husband after an argument, in southwest Delhi’s Mahipalpur on Monday morning. The woman is out of danger and efforts are under way to arrest the man, police said.

According to the police, the incident happened around 8.30 am when Kavita Kumari, who had been staying at her parent’s house in Mahipalpur for the past two years, was returning home after dropping her two sons at school.

The police quoting locals and witnesses said Kavita’s husband Ritesh Kumar, a property dealer who lives in Gurugram, stopped her near her parent’s house and an argument broke out. “Ritesh turned aggressive. He took out a pistol and fired a shot at Kavita. She sustained a bullet injury on her shoulder. Seeing her collapse, Ritesh fled. Locals called the police and rushed Kavita to a nearby hospital where she is under treatment,” deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Devender Arya said.

Initial probe revealed Kavita and Ritesh got married about eight years ago. Family members and relatives told police Ritesh ’s property dealing business was not doing well and he recently started taking drugs.

This led to problems between the couple and they used to fight frequently. Kavita had filed a domestic violence case against her husband with the Gurugram police. Two years ago, Kavita left her in-law’s house in Gurugram and started living with her parents.

Following the incident, a Delhi police team raided Ritesh ’s house in Gurugram but he was absconding.

Locals told the police two other men were accompanying Ritesh. “We are looking at CCTV footage to identify the other accused. Teams have been formed to nab Ritesh who is on the run. His possible hideouts are being raided. A case of attempt to murder has been registered against him,” the DCP said.
