NEW DELHI: Police on Thursday arrested three men and apprehended a juvenile for the murder of a 19-year-old man whose body was found on the railway tracks in Vivek Vihar on September 16.

Police said the man had boarded a train to Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, for a job interview, from Delhi’s Shahadra railway station on the day he was murdered. Another juvenile involved in the crime is at a drug de-addiction centre and will be detained upon release, police said.

Police said the accused snatched the man’s phone and documents on board the train and fled. The man got down at Sahibabad in Ghaziabad and caught a train back to Vivek Vihar station to trace the snatchers. When he confronted them, one of them slashed his throat with a machete and left his body on the tracks to make it look like a train accident, police said.

Around 6am on September 16, a milkman spotted the dismembered body and alerted the police.

Deputy commissioner of police (Railways) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said, “The autopsy report showed that the man had a deep cut on his neck and a stab wound in the thigh. Since the death looked suspicious, we registered a case of murder,” Gupta said.

During the probe, the man was identified as Samad (known by his first name), a resident of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Questioning revealed that he had boarded the Delhi-bareilly passenger train (54078) from Shahdara railway station at 12.06am to appear for an interview.

Minutes before he died, Samad had also called her sister and informed her that his valuables had been snatched.

With this lead, the police

searching for gangs that target railway passengers between Shahdara and Vivek Vihar.

“Our teams got information about a suspect, Deepu (single name). He was arrested from near Shahdara,” the DCP said.

“During questioning, Deepu revealed that he along with two juveniles and two others — Akash (24) and Pradeep (20) (both go by single names), had snatched the mobile phone and valuables of Samad near Vivek Vihar railway station,” Gupta said.

One of the juveniles was apprehended

and Akash and Pradeep arrested. Gupta said the trio told police that after snatching Samad’s articles, they were drinking alcohol near Vivek Vihar station when Samad confronted them.

“In the fight that ensued, one of the juveniles slashed Samad’s throat with a machete and also stabbed him in the thigh. They left his body on the tracks and fled,” the officer said.

The juvenile who slashed Samad will be apprehended upon his release from the de-addiction centre, Gupta said.
