NEW DELHI: A day after they released portraits of three suspects allegedly involved in the murder of 34-year-old businessman Sushil Chauhan in a road rage in Geeta Colony Monday night, police Friday arrested two men for their involvement in the crime. Police said the two men had a strong resemblance with the sketches prepared with the help of eyewitnesses.

Deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said, “As shown in the sketches, the arrested men have scars on their cheeks. One is clean-shaven while the other has a beard and moustache. The key accused, who allegedly stabbed Chauhan, is still on the run.”

Police said the two arrested men — Aftab,32, and Ramesh alias Punjabi,33 — along with his accomplice who is still absconding — committed two crimes in quick succession Monday night.

The three men first attacked a businessman with a knife and robbed him of his bag containing around ₹3,000 and some documents in Shakarpur.

“They were fleeing towards their home in Geeta Colony on a scooter and a bike when they had an altercation with Chauhan after the scooter brushed past his Wagon R car under the Geeta Colony flyover. Since the three wanted to flee as fast as possible to avoid being caught for the robbery, one of them stabbed Chauhan to deter him from further confrontation,” said Yadav.

A resident of Usmanpur in northeast Delhi, Chauhan was driving home with his cousin Ashwani, friend Kartik, and three others after having dinner when the crime took place.chauhan died of bleeding, police said.

During investigation, police learnt about a robbery of a couple a few kilometres away from the murder spot 15-20 minutes prior. The robbery victim told police three men on a scooter and a bike had robbed him at knife point and fled towards Geeta Colony.

“The businessman helped us prepare sketches . The occupants of Chauhan’s car gave physical descriptions of the third man. The businessman and the car occupants verified the portraits which matched,” Yadav said.

The portraits were pasted across east Delhi. Police questioned more than 50 people.

Police, however, did not reveal the photographs of the two men, saying they would be first conduct a test identification parade.
