Students take charge, show how to preserve the environment
NEW DELHI: To sensitise students about environment conservation and sustainability, The Shri Ram School in Vasant Vihar organised a flagship event, “mad about environment”, on Friday.
The event—a collective effort of teachers, students and parents— showcased how to preserve environment through exhibition and activities.
According to the Sri Ram Schools chairperson Arun Bharat Ram, the idea behind organising the event was to “inculcate” a sense of responsibility among students towards the environment. The students of the primary wing of the school, which caters classes I to 5, set up stalls on themes like global warming, recycling of waste products, air pollution, save wild life and energy conservation, etc.
The students of class 3 set up a stall called “Fly free in Shri” wherein they showcased how pollutants affect the lungs. “We divided the stall into two parts— green or clean part and polluted part—and put a big model of lungs in the middle. While the half part of the lung, which was on the green side, was clean, the other was shown black. The idea was to make students aware about the effect of pollutants on lungs,” said Pooja Grover, parent of a class 3 student, who had contributed for the stall.
Another stall encouraged students to celebrate “green Christmas”. “We installed a Christmas tree made of recycled products to encourage students to do the same at their home,” said another parent.
Few metres from the stall was an activity area set up by students of class I to create awareness about “animal habitat conservation”.
“We have leaned here that forests need to be conserved to help animals survive happily. We have to preserve their habitats,” said Diksha, a class 1 student at the school.
The event was attended by guests such as former Supreme Court judge and former chairperson of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Justice Swatanter Kumar and environment activist Vimlendu Jha.
“It is crucial to sensitise students about environment in their early ages because they are the future of the country,” Kumar said.
