NEWDELHI: This Republic Day, the New Delhi Municipal Council will inaugurate the city’s tallest fountain in the heart of the national capital.

Officials said work on the 90-foot-high fountain at the Windsor Place roundabout, near Janpath, will be completed by January 25. Currently, the tallest fountain in the city is 50-foot high and is located at the Lodhi Gardens Lake, officials said.

“To mark the Republic Day, we will open the fountain on January 26. This would be the tallest fountain in the city and has been built on the advice of the Delhi urban art commission (DUAC),” a senior NDMC official said, adding that 20 per cent of the 1.75-acre land where the roundabout is located is being used for developing the fountain.

“Besides constructing a 90-foot high fountain in the middle of the roundabout, there will be six other fountains, each measuring 45 feet high, surrounding the place. We will be landscape the area, install benches for visitors and uplighters for trees, place decorative plants, pebble stones and colourful lights to give the place an aesthetic look,” NDMC chairperson, Naresh Kumar, said.

The fountains, officials said, will be operational for three hours each in the morning, afternoon and evening. “We are presently laying the pipeline for supplying water to the place. A small fountain was built here earlier too, but that became defunct due to the lack of water supply. After consulting with the DUAC, we decided to refurbish the place completely,” said another NDMC official.

For easy access to the place, the civic agency will also construct a gateway to the fountain at the roundabout from all sides.

Besides, the NDMC will inaugurate two other fountains at Kautilya Marg and Jalebi Park, near North Block, on January 25.

“We are developing the Kautilya Marg roundabout and the Jalebi Park near Jalebi Chowk for sightseeing. Though fountains will about 30-foot in height, more emphasis will be given on beautification of the places by placing seasonal flowering plants and decorative lights. Proper attention will be given for maintenance of the place by the horticulture department,” said the NDMC official.
