Admissions to 6 skill centres from Monday
NEWDELHI: The Delhi government Friday announced that admissions to six new World Class Skill Centres (WCSC) for the March 2019 session will begin Monday. These centres — at Pusa Road, Rajokari, Jhandewalan, Dwarka, Pushp Vihar and Wazirpur — are part of the first phase of the WCSC expansion plan, and will offer one-year certificate courses to 720 students in different sectors.
“Skill does not just mean working at an industrial unit. It also means having a professional approach towards a vocation, with an appropriately groomed personality, and better communication skills,” deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia said, speaking at a WCSC in the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) for Women at Vivek Vihar, established in 2013.
“We are also planning to introduce an entrepreneurship programme in the course, so that along with 100% placement, youngsters can also become jobgivers,” Sisodia added. Nineteen more skill centres are expected to be operational by August as a part of the second phase of expansion, officials said. These centres will be in ITIS, polytechnics, engineering colleges and universities under the Directorate of Training and Technical Education (DTTE).
The DTTE had set up the Vivek Vihar WCSC in collaboration with Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education, Government of Singapore, to help further increase the employability of job-seekers. The main WCSC campus is being built at Jonapur at an estimated cost of ₹254.04 crore and will be ready by March 2020.
The Vivek Vihar centre currently has over 1,000 seats across a range of courses and positions like hospitality operations, retail services, banking and finance executive, and web developer and digital marketing, according to officials. Graduates, and students who have passed Class 12 can apply for these courses.
