JAPAN PM NOMINATED TRUMP FOR NOBEL AFTER US REQUEST, SAYS REPORT
TOKYO: Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize last autumn after being requested to do so by Washington, a Japanese newspaper reported on Sunday. Washington sounded out Tokyo over the possibility of nominating Trump for the prize after his landmark summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June last year, an unnamed Japanese government source told Asahi Shimbun. The report came after Trump’s claim on Friday that Abe had nominated him for the prize. Trump said Abe had sent him a copy of a five-page nomination letter delivered to the Nobel Peace Prize committee.
9 people charred to death in Bangladeshi slum fire
DHAKA: A major fire in Bangladesh gutted over 200 shanties, killing at least nine persons including two children in the port city of Chittagong on Sunday. The devastating blaze broke out in the wee hours when most of the slum dwellers were asleep. The reason behind the fire was not immediately known.
Maldives: Yameen’s aide charged for embezzlement
COLOMBO: Prosectors in the Maldives on Sunday charged a top aide of former leader Abdulla Yameen with embezzling millions of dollars from the tropical tourist paradise. The charges against former justice minister Azima Shakoor come days after Yameen was hit with his own indictment on graft charges. Maldivian police said it has proof linking Yameen and Shakoor to the theft of millions from the country.

LONDON: A runaway teenager who had joined the IS group in Syria but now wants to return home has given birth, her family said on Sunday. Shamima Begum gave birth to a boy, according to family lawyer Mohammed Akunjee. “We understand that both she and the baby are in good health,” he tweeted.
Woman held for ‘murdering sister’ and freezing body
ZAGREB: A Croatian woman has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her sister 18 years ago after a body was discovered in a freezer in her home, prosecutors said on Sunday. Jasmina Dominic, 23, was studying in Zagreb when she went missing in 2000, according to press reports. Police suspect her frozen remains have been found after the home of Dominic’s sister was searched in the village of Mala Subotica.
