Students march for equal opportunities
NEW DELHI: Members of six students’ associations on Monday took out a protest march —“hunkar rally”—from Ramlila Maidan to Parliament Street, raising demands such as increase in funding for public education and equal job opportunities for all.
This was the second such protest march by students in February in Delhi. A similar march was held on February 7, by 35 students’ groups demanding education and job opportunities.
Hundreds of members from organisationslike Students’federation of India (SFI), All India Students Federation (AISF), and Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) participated in the march joined by students from several higher institutions .
“The central demands raised include a fully funded common education system, an increase in budget allocation for education, better implementation of existing reservations in both government and private institutions, immediate disbursement of scholarships, protection of the federal character of education, an end to its communalisation, and an end to gender based atrocities in education,” Mayukh Biswas, national general secretary, SFI
Dinesh Kumar of KYS said, “The need of the hour is to set up a common school education system in the country in order to end inequality. State governmentrun schools across the country are in a very pathetic condition.”
