NEWDELHI: A police team posed as local residents of Mewat in Haryana to arrest a gang of robbers who had stolen ₹29 lakh after breaking open an ATM in south Delhi’s Maidangarhi a week ago, the police said on Sunday.

Atul Kumar Thakur, deputy commissioner of police (south), said that five suspects were arrested from Kharak village in Haryana’s Bhiwani district on Saturday morning after they allegedly tried to mow down a police team that was waiting to arrest them .

“The robbers, who were driving a Hyundai Verna car, were chased by us after their attempt to mow us down. We found them in possession of a pistol and 41 live cartridges,” the DCP said.

The officer said that the gang was found to be involved in over a dozen incidents in which they broke open ATMS in Delhi and Haryana to steal money.

“Their main modus operandi was to spray foam on CCTV cameras inside and outside ATM booths they were targeting,” the DCP said. The officer said that members of this very gang had been arrested earlier for stealing money from another ATM in Maidangarhi and had continued their crimes after being released from jail.

The police said they had been trailing this gang since September 15 when they broke open another ATM in the same neighbourhood to steal ₹29 lakh. They scanned CCTV camera footage from nearby areas to find blurred images of a Verna car.

“We worked on the few clues provided by those images to identify the suspects as residents of Mewat. We got to know that they were carrying firearms and did not hesitate to open fire on policemen, so we posed as local residents while camping in Mewat,” the officer said, adding that a 30-member team was formed to nab this gang.

When the police team finally nabbed the five members of this gang, they turned out to be previously involved in attacks on policemen as well, the DCP said. “We have recovered ₹2.15 lakh of the robbed money from them and seized three cars used by them in the crimes,” the officer said.
