NOIDA: The mercury fell by about two degrees on Thursday with the Noida region seeing a cold wave, while the weather department sees no respite for the next few days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperature will further fall to around 5 degrees Celsius or less, leading to a few more days of cold wave, as well as dense fog for Noida and Ghaziabad, while adjoining Delhi will see slightly better visibility with moderate fog.

The IMD on Thursday forecasted cold waves for Friday and Sunday, with a cold yet slightly improved Saturday.

“The mercury may slightly rise by one degree on Saturday, which may technically not be qualified as a cold wave but weather conditions will be harsh. Friday and Sunday will see a cold wave and may also see a drop in the day time temperatures, due to icy cold northwesterly winds,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, head, regional weather forecasting centre, IMD.

The weather scientists stated that due to chances of cloudy skies towards Friday, heat is likely to get trapped, thereby evading cold wave conditions on Saturday. However, the minimum temperatures would still hover around 5°.

He also warned of dense fog during the morning hours in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad areas. “The visibility would be low in Noida and adjoining areas of western Uttar Pradesh, with dense fog for the next few days during the morning hours,” Srivastava added.

On Thursday, the minimum temperature for Noida was recorded at 6.7° against 7.6° a day earlier.

The maximum temperature for the city was recorded at 19.3° against 21° a day earlier. The average minimum for the NCR, based on Safdarjung observatory, was 3.8° five notches below the season’s average against 5.4° a day earlier. The average maximum for NCR was 19.4°, against 21.5° a day earlier.
