FOUR HELD FOR BEATING DALIT MAN IN TN: COPS

CHENNAI: Four men have been detained in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district for beating up a Dalit man who allegedly stole money from them, police officials said on Thursday. According to officials, the incident took place on February 1, when the victim, identified as 24-year-old G Rahul, allegedly stole money from one of the four accused. A video of the incident, which has been widely shared on social media, shows the four accused repeatedly thrashing Rahul, who is blindfolde­d, with a baton. The victim, who sustained severe injuries, consumed poison after the attack, and is being treated at the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, officials said. An FIR has been filed against four men under six sections of the Indian Penal Code, including sections 307, and under relevant sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, said a senior police official requesting anonymity. The four accused — Vicky alias Vignesh, 25, Rajadurai, 24, Parthiban, 25, and Sarath, 24 — have been detained, the officials said. The accused and the victim knew each other, they said.
