Parliament passes bill to give autonomy to major ports
NEW DELHI: Parliament on Wednesday passed a bill to provide greater autonomy to 12 major ports and set up boards to improve governance. The Major Port Authorities Bill, 2020 was passed in Rajya Sabha with 84 MPS voting in favour and 44 against it. Lok Sabha passed the Bill last September. The law is aimed at improving aspects such as regulation and operation of the country’s ports, and vesting their administration and control in boards appointed by the Centre on the recommendation of a selection panel.
