Noida: Two members of a gang were arrested on Thursday night for allegedly duping people across the national capital region (NCR) by cloning ATM cards and then withdrawing money from the victims’ accounts.

Police recovered a laptop, three ATM cards, 69 cloned cards, several card readers, micro cameras, and ₹2.5 lakh cash, among others, from the possession of the suspects.

The suspects were identified as Firoz and Sachin Sharma, both from Surajpur in Greater Noida.

The duo was arrested by the Phase 2 police from near Sector 110.

Police officers said that they have received information about one more member of the gang, and are trying to locate him.

The gang was active in Delhincr for the past two years, the officials said.

“The two suspects were more active in the rural parts of GB Nagar and targeted ATMS at desolated locations after thorough recce. They used two methods to clone cards. Sometimes they would offer to help customers withdraw money, most of whom would be either aged or people belonging to low income group. Then they would get their card details. In other cases, they would install mini cameras and e-readers to record details of cards being inserted in ATMS. These cards would later be cloned and the suspects would withdraw money from the victims’ accounts,” said Anita Chauhan the station house officer of the Phase 2 police station

Police said they had inputs about the gang following which a team was formed to track them. “At least seven cases are registered at our police station while we are working on identifying other such cases against them. The gang members had been active for nearly two years now and we suspect them to have withdrawn crores of rupees in this manner. They had become more active after the lockdown and most of the equipment they used to clone cards was purchased online,” said Chauhan.

Other members of the gang are also being traced, said police.

The two suspects were produced before a magistrate and later sent to jail.
