How Allahabad HC stood for civil rights

-

On January 25, the Supreme Court reminded the Uttar Pradesh government that a high court is also a constitutional court and cannot be taken lightly. The observation followed a raft of significant judgments and orders delivered by the high court when people knocked on its doors for having their fundamental rights protected. The Allahabad HC has risen to the occasion each time, reaffirming the importance of the rights to privacy and autonomy. Some instances of how the HC took a stand include ordering the UP government to immediately remove banners put up to recover damages from those involved in anticaa protests; granting bail to a person booked for cow slaughter and expressing concerns over the law, and quashing an FIR lodged against a Muslim man whose wife converted to Islam before marriage.
