KANPUR: Three teenage girls were found unconscious with their hands tied in a field in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district late on Wednesday, police said. Two of the girls, aged 13 and 15, died on their way to the hospital while a third, aged 16, was rushed to Kanpur in a critical condition.

Local police said the girls were found with froth on their mouths, suggesting they may have been poisoned. More will be clear after the autopsy results, police added.

“The girls left the house around 3pm to collect fodder from the family fields. When they did not return till late night, the family mounted a search with villagers,” said Unnao superintendent of police Anand Kulkarni. Senior police officers, including inspector general of police, Lucknow, Laxmi Singh, were on the spot along with forensic experts and sniffer dogs.

The girls were found unconscious in a corner of a field tied with a dupatta belonging to one of the girls, Kulkarni added.

When the girls were found around 9:30pm, family members rushed them to the nearest community health centre where doctors declared two of them dead. The other victim was taken to Unnao district hospital from where she was taken to Kanpur.
