UP couple consumes poison, teen girl dies

LUCKNOW: A 17-year-old girl died of suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj city on Wednesday after she and her partner consumed poison outside the Allahabad high court, police said.

The girl and the man, 28, belonged to different religions.

Kotwali station house officer Vinod Kumar said the interfaith couple reached the high court premises to apply for court marriage but were told that their union couldn’t be solemnised.

Depressed, they consumed poison and were taken to hospital. “The woman died while undergoing treatment late in the night and the man’s condition was serious but stable,” the Kotwali station house officer said.

Police said the couple left their home in Hardoi a week ago to get married. The girl’s family filed abduction charges against the man in Hardoi, police added.
