NOIDA: Two unidentified conmen duped a woman of gold worth ₹1.5 lakh in Greater Noida west and fled, the police said. The family of the women launched a search for them after realising foul play but the suspects had fled by that time. A complaint has been registered in the matter.

Sumit Kumar Chaudhury, a resident of Chipiyana Buzurg village, filed a complaint at the Bisrakh police station on Thursday. He said two days ago, two persons were seen roaming around in the neighbourhood, identifying themselves as gold smiths who polish gold and silver jewellery.

“I was not at home at the time. They visited our house and told my mother that they have some “special powder” to brighten gold and silver jewellery. My mother was reluctant at first but they somehow convinced her. She then brought her gold necklace and ring, both weighing 25 grams, for cleaning,” he alleged.

The complainant’s father, Amlesh Chaudhury, said the suspects put some powder and chemicals on the jewellery and pretended to clean it. “Then they asked my wife for a container, and the suspects said that they had put the jewellery in it. They asked her to put the container on the stove for a few minutes,” he alleged.

The suspects soon left the spot on a motorcycle after taking ₹30 as a cleaning fee. “My wife later checked the container and found some silver jewellery instead of gold,” Amlesh said. Upon getting to know, he searched for the suspects but they had fled by then.

Amlesh said both suspects were in the age group of 25-30 years, and they have been photographed in the CCTV cameras installed in the neighbourhood.

Munish Chauhan, station house officer, Bisrakh police station, said that based on the complaint a case has been registered against two unknown persons under Section 379 (theft) of IPC.

“We are investigating the matter to arrest them,” he said.
