How north-east Delhi burned over four days

First incidence of violence of the Delhi riots breaks out between groups of anti-caa protesters and supporters of the law. Stone-pelting reported below the Jafrabad Metro. Clashes spread across N-E Delhi.

February 24

Stone pelting reported from different parts of north-east Delhi such as in Maujpur, Chand Bagh, Dayalpur, Gokalpuri, North Ghonda, Bhajanpura. Firing reported during clashes at Maujpur chowk. Police report says there were 100,00 comprising anti-caa protesters, and supporters of the law rioted. Fire at petrol pump in Bhajanpura. The Delhi Police claimed that over 100 people shouting anti-caa slogans torched it. Fire at tyre market near Kapoor Petrol Pump in Gokalpuri. At least 90 shops, and several vehicles were gutted. At Chand Bagh, a mob corners head constable Rattan Lal and DCP Amit Sharma. Lal is beaten to death, the only cop to die in the riots. Sharma is hospitalis­ed with serious injuries. Shah Rukh Pathan, a resident of north-east Delhi is caught on video brandishin­g a pistol at a constable. Stone pelting in Chand Bagh. Rioters pelt stones and attack police personnel who shutter themselves in a parking lot. The mob breaks open the shutter, set cars inside on fire.at least 150 cars burnt inside two parking lots here. Local politician Tahir Hussain has been charged in this case.

February 24-25

Several injured after a mob starts firing bullets during the violence. Incidents of arson reported at Bihu Chowk, Jai Prakash Nagar and New Usmapur.

February 25

A motorcycle showroom is set afire in Khajoori Khas. At least 50 motorcycle­s are gutted. Rioters pelt stones at the Victor School building in Maujpur, and smash its window panes. Stones pelted at DRP Convent Secondary School on Brijpuri Karawal Nagar Road in Shiv Vihar. Classrooms, books, answer sheets and benches burnt. Akbar Devi, 85, dies after rioters set her house on fire. According to records, she is the only woman who lost her life during the clashes.

Intelligen­ce Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma is stabbed while he was out on the streets during the violence. He was stabbed and thrown off a bridge by a mob near the Chand Bagh Pulia. Sharma's body was fished out from a drain near the Main Nala Road. The drain passes through several parts of north-east Delhi. At least eight persons were killed and thrown into this drain. A mosque in Shahdara’s Ashok Nagar damaged by rioters who pelted stones at it, and tried to set it on fire.

February 26

Body of Uttarakhan­d resident Dilbar Negi recovered from inside his shop in Karawal Nagar. He was burnt alive on Feb 24, his hands were chopped off.
