Myanmar’s Miss Universe contestant, Thuzar Wint Lwin, used the pageant in the US on Sunday to urge the world to speak out against her country’s military junta.

Our people are dying and being shot by the military every day,” she said in a video message for the competition, where she was appearing in the finals at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

The US treasury, meanwhile, slapped sanctions on 16 senior Myanmar officials and family members on Monday, citing their support for the government’s “violent and lethal attacks” against the country’s pro-democracy movement.
