50-tonne concrete slab falls at RRTS site, none injured

GHAZIABAD: A concrete segment weighing around 50 tonnes fell at an under-constructi­on site of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project in Modinagar in Ghaziabad district on Tuesday evening.

The officials of National Capital Region Transport Corporatio­n (NCRTC), which is developing the entire project, said that they will initiate an inquiry into the incident.

The incident took place on a day when Uttar Pradesh chief minister visited Meerut and inspected the RRTS project site at Bahinsali along with top NCRTC officials. Vinay Kumar Singh, managing director of NCRTC, was also present during the event

According to officials of NCRTC, one of the segments which was suspended with a cable attached to launcher ‘Tarini’ – a high-capacity crane used for lifting and placing segments – fell at the project site on the Delhi Meerut Road.

“The cable snapped during the load testing. The incident took place inside a barricaded area and no one was injured. An inquiry will be ordered soon,” said Puneet Vats, NCRTC’S chief public relations officer (PRO).

“The incident took place around 6.30pm on Tuesday and no one was injured,” said Iraj Raja, superinten­dent of police, Ghaziabad (rural).

The 82-kilometre-long RRTS project is scheduled for completion in March 2025, while a 17-kilometre priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai is slated to open for passenger operations in March 2023.

The RRTS project is pegged at ₹30,274 crore and will link Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut with high-speed train connectivi­ty on elevated as well as undergroun­d sections.
