GHAZIABAD: A large container vehicle and a truck collided head-on on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), near Dasna, at around 4am on Saturday. Both the vehicles caught fire during the accident.

According to police, the container was carrying a transformer and was travelling on the wrong side of traffic flow, leading to the collision. Fire department officials rushed four fire tenders to the spot to manage the situation

“Once the vehicles hit each other, the impact immediately resulted in a huge ball of fire. The truck caught fire immediately, while flames engulfed the back of the container. We rushed fire tenders to the spot and controlled the situation. No one suffered any injury during the incident,” said Sunil Kumar Singh, chief fire officer.

The incident was also captured on one of the CCTV cameras installed on the EPE.

“The incident happened during the wee hours on Saturday. Traffic police personnel are usually not deployed at such early hours. We spotted the container at Dadri toll on the EPE, and it was coming towards Dasna. We rigorously check traffic violations on the EPE, but none of the toll staff or patrol vans noticed that the vehicle was driving on the wrong side,” said Ramanand Kushwaha, superintendent of police (traffic).

The EPE is equipped with an intelligent traffic system which can detect traffic violations and generate e-challans. Additionally, it alerts commuters about weather conditions and accidents on the road.
