NEW DELHI: Monsoon is likely to arrive in Delhi around June 30 against the expected date of June 27, a private forecaster said on Sunday. “We are expecting a 2-3 days delay in the arrival of monsoon over Delhi. While there may not be a significant delay, the present pattern of cloudy skies and pre-monsoon rain is likely to cease. From June 22, westerly dry winds will blow. We will have to wait for monsoon winds to establish which may be likely around June 30,” Mahesh Palawat, vice president, climate change and meteorology, Skymet Weather said.

The India Meteorological Department, meanwhile, said monsoon has advanced into parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar.

The ongoing pre-monsoon activity over parts of northwest India, and Delhi will continue till

June 21 but dry, hot winds will affect the region thereafter, IMD said on Sunday. According to IMD’S extended range forecast, moderate rainfall activity over Delhi and neighbouring areas is likely between June 24 and 30.

“As you can see, we haven’t said anything about monsoon onset over Delhi. We do not have information about Delhi onset as yet. Pre-monsoon rain will continue over Delhi and neighbouring areas till June 22 then wind pattern will once again change to westerly leading to hot and dry winds blowing over the region,” said RK Jenamani, senior scientist, national weather forecasting centre at IMD.
