BHIMA KOREGAON ACCUSED RELEASED FROM PRISON

-

NAVI MUMBAI: Bhima Koregaon accused Gautam Navlakha, 70, was released from prison on Saturday, and taken to the officecum-library building of the CPI (M) in Navi Mumbai’s Belapur. He will stay under house arrest on the premises for a month.

His release from Taloja jail two years after his arrest came after the Supreme Court on November 10 granted his plea seeking house arrest on medical grounds. On Friday, the top court dismissed the National Investigation Agency’s plea seeking recall of the order directing Navlakha’s house arrest. The court gave NIA 24 hours to give effect to its November 10 order after installing additional measures for securing the Belapur premises where Navlakha will stay. These additional measures included sealing of an alternative entry door, locking the window grille inside the house and shifting the CCTV recording unit to a place of the NIA’S choice.

NIA had arrested Navlakha in April 2020 in connection with the violence that took place at Bhima Koregaon in January 2018.
