BATHINDA: The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Monday continued with its “chakka jam” for the sixth day in various parts of Punjab, causing inconvenience to several commuters in and around the area.

The protesting farmers are seeking a resolution to various demands, including more compensation for land acquired for national highway projects and for crop damage due to inclement weather and pest attacks, cancellation of cases against some farmers and bonus for wheat yield loss.

In south Malwa, farmers blocked traffic at three points – in Mansa town, Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda and National Highway 54 near Tehna village in Faridkot.

Jaswant Singh, a resident of Faridkot, said he had to travel an extra distance of 20km to reach Bathinda due to the blockade. “Highway users are the worst hit as they have to navigate via the link roads... There is complete chaos,” he said.

Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Sidhupur) president Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is supporting the SKM stir, said he would continue his fast unto death till Punjab comes up with a resolution to the various demands of farmers.
