PUNJAB FARMERS’ STIR CONTINUES FOR EIGHTH DAY
The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Wednesday continued with its chakka jam, for the eighth day, in various parts of Punjab, causing inconvenience to several commuters in and around the area.
The protesting farmers are seeking a resolution to various demands, including more compensation for land acquired for national highway projects and for crop damage due to inclement weather and pest attack, cancellation of cases against some farmers and bonus for wheat yield loss.
President of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal) Harinder Singh Lakhowal said the SKM has called a meeting in Mohali on Friday and a decision to support the ongoing protest is on the agenda.
The SKM may have differences with the parallel faction, which calls itself a non-political front, but farmers’ rights are a common objective for all, Singh said.
