Canadian-israeli teen killed in twin blasts
A Canadian-israeli teenager was killed and at least 14 others hurt in twin attacks in Jerusalem on Wednesday, amid growing violence between Israelis and Palestinians.
The first blast detonated near a bus stop at the entrance to Jerusalem and a second exploded 30 minutes later near the Ramot junction in the city. Police said they suspected the two attacks were linked.
Canada’s ambassador to Israel, Lisa Stadelbauer, said in a tweet that the 15-year-old victim of the attack, Aryeh Schupak, was a Canadian national, while
Israel’s foreign ministry confirmed that he also held Israeli citizenship. US ambassador to Israel Thomas R Nides said in a tweet that two US citizens were among the injured.
There has been a significant increase in violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank since then. More than 130 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the year, according to the UN and Palestinian health authorities. While no group has claimed responsibility, the Gaza-based militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad both issued messages of praise.
