DMK WORKER SETS HIMSELF ON FIRE AGAINST ‘HINDI IMPOSITION’: COPS

-

A senior DMK cadre on Saturday died of selfimmolation near the party office in Thazhaiyur, near Mettur in nearby Salem district in Tamil Nadu.

The man took the step to show his protest against ‘Hindi imposition’, police said.

The 85-year-old deceased, a former DMK farmers’ wing functionary, raised slogans against ‘Hindi imposition’, allegedly poured kerosene on his body and set himself on fire with the help of a matchstick. Though party workers and the public tried to save him, he died on the spot, they said.

Police recovered a paper addressing the central government, which read, “there is no need for imposing Hindi when Tamil language is here.”

Chief minister M K Stalin said he was saddened by the “tragic demise” of the cadre.
