KANPUR: The school education department in Kanpur has launched an inquiry into allegations that a school teacher used a power drill on a 11-year-old student’s hand after he failed to recite the table of two, officials familiar with the matter said.

According to reports, the incident took place in the model upper primary school in Prem Nagar area of the city. The teacher, Anuj Kumar, who works as an instructor under a government programme that gives training in schools, allegedly used a power drill that was being used by a carpenter as part of maintenance work to punish the Class 5 student, people aware of the matter said.

Basic shiksha adhikari Surjit Singh told reporters on Sunday that an inquiry panel had been formed to look into the incident and that Kumar was removed from his post. Singh visited the school following reports of the incident. “Action will be taken on the basis of the inquiry report,” he said. “The panel consisting of two teachers has started the probe. It would also look into the role of head teacher Alka Tiwari who did not report the incident to the superiors,” said Singh. Tiwari was not available for comment.

Schoolteachers HT spoke to on Sunday said Kumar was trying to scare the student but the drill accidentally ended up touching the boy’s hand. Kumar is missing since the alleged incident.

According to Dcp(central), Ravindra Kumar, no complaint had been filed in connection with the matter so far. Police will lodge the FIR if a complaint comes in, he added. Members of the student’s family also refused to comment on the matter. DCP Kumar said, two constables had visited the school on Saturday but no one has come forward to lodge a complaint.
