Girl killed, her sisters hurt as car rams them

NOIDA: A six-year-old girl was killed and her two sisters injured after a speeding car them in Som Bazar, a busy street market, under Sector 39 police station area on Sunday, police said, adding that the errant driver has been arrested.

Police identified the driver of the car as Sanoj (single name), of Mainpuri district in Uttar Pradesh and a resident of Sadarpur village in Noida.

Police said the incident took place on Sunday evening, around 4pm. The sisters, Riya (6), Anu (15) and Ankita (18), were having street food from a vendor’s stall in the market, along with their mother Pushpa. “While they were having snacks, a speeding Swift Dzire car crashed into them. All three sisters were injured and rushed to a hospital. After hitting the girls, the car crashed into a pile of bricks and stopped,” said Rajneesh Verma, assistant commission­er of police, Noida.

ACP Verma added that the driver of the car was held by the public while one of the occupants of the car managed to flee the spot. Police arrested Sanoj after the public handed him over to them and also seized his car. Officials said the suspect was heavily drunk at the time of the incident and was speeding through a crowded market area, leading to the crash.

“All three girls were taken to Child PGI. Anu and Ankita were discharged after first-aid while Riya was transferre­d to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi. She died during treatment on Monday morning. Eyewitness­es have informed police that the suspect was driving rashly before losing control of the vehicle and ramming the girls on the roadside,” Verma said.

A case has been registered against the accused under sections 304A (causing death due to negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code. teams are working to arrest the absconding fellow passenger. According to the Noida traffic police data, 354 people have died in 897 road accidents so far this year in Noida and Greater Noida.
